The best finance AI programmes will not start with "which chatbot should we buy?"
They will start by mapping roles, controls and decision rights:
- Which close tasks need automation, and which need review?
- Which FP&A assumptions can be suggested by AI, and who challenges them?
- Which exceptions should route to AP, tax, treasury or internal controls?
- Which finance colleagues need prompt skills, process skills or data literacy first?
This is where CFOs have a real opportunity. AI should not just make the existing finance function faster. It should make the team more commercially useful, more control-aware and less dependent on heroic spreadsheet firefighting.
