Finance AI will not fix a weak ERP blueprint.

Deloitte’s Q1 2026 CFO Signals survey, reported by the Journal of Accountancy, found cost management was the top internal risk for large-company CFOs. The same survey said automation or technology upgrades were seen as the most effective cost-control lever, with 49% of CFOs under pressure to invest in cloud and AI.

That matters for ERP programmes.

For years, finance transformation projects have been judged on whether the system went live: chart of accounts loaded, workflows configured, reports rebuilt, users trained.

AI changes the bar.

The question is no longer just: “Did we implement the ERP?”

It is: “Can the finance function trust the data, controls and process design enough for AI to act on them?”

That means the unglamorous work becomes strategic:

• clean supplier, customer and item masters
• consistent dimensions and posting rules
• documented approval workflows
• clear ownership of interfaces and exceptions
• reconciled opening balances and migration evidence
• reporting definitions agreed before go-live

If those foundations are weak, AI produces faster confusion: automated variance commentary based on inconsistent mappings, cash forecasts distorted by poor master data, exception alerts nobody owns, and dashboards that look clever but fail the audit trail test.
