ERP change programmes need more than a data migration checklist. Before go-live, test who owns master data, approval exceptions and evidence trails. AI can flag gaps early; finance must sign off the control design.

Finance AI use case: procurement and spend analysis.

An ERP can hold every purchase order and invoice yet still leave a finance team struggling to answer a basic question: what are we actually spending, with whom, and against which commitments?

The problem is rarely a missing dashboard. It is inconsistent supplier records, fragmented category codes, free-text descriptions and transactions booked after the decision has already been made. Adding AI to that data without fixing the controls can make the output look precise while the underlying classification remains unreliable.

A practical approach starts with a narrow, testable use case. Take one spend category and reconcile purchase orders, receipts, invoices and supplier master data. Establish a baseline: how many transactions are uncategorised, how often do duplicates appear, and what proportion of spend bypasses an approved route?

Then use AI where it earns its place: suggest category mappings for messy descriptions, flag possible duplicate suppliers, and surface unusual price or volume changes for a human to review. Keep the original transaction, the proposed classification, the reviewer decision and the reason for any override. That audit trail matters more than an impressive-looking prediction.

Measure the result against the baseline: classification accuracy on a reviewed sample, exceptions resolved, and time taken to produce a trusted spend view. If those measures do not improve, broaden neither the model nor the rollout.

For finance leaders, the opportunity is not “autonomous procurement”. It is better evidence for supplier conversations, tighter controls and faster decisions, built on ERP data that can be traced back to source.
